This book delivered one of the best ship confirming lines in the form of "I meant to kiss you."

Everything about this story is amazing. Tracy Deonn has lifted the standard for what a YA fantasy series could be. The characters are extremely complex. Their emotions feel real and raw in a relatable way I connected with right away. The world building was steadily introduced, with more showing how it operates rather than telling. The magic system was also extremely refreshing. I wasn't originally drawn in by the idea of a King Author and his Knites based magic system. However, this extremely white history is foiled by another magic system called Root. This book also does not shy away from tackling important topics around representation and generational violence that often goes unrecognized.

I will definitely be reading more of anything Tracy Deonn publishes. She has fully cemented herself as one of my favorite authors. Though Bree has become one of my favorite female main characters, it was truly Selwyn who has stolen my entire heart. I wish for nothing but the best for him.
