In All That She Carried, historian Tiya Miles tells the story of a cotton sack embroidered with this story: “My great grandmother Rose mother of Ashley gave her this sack when she was sold at age 9 in South Carolina [1853] it held a tattered dress 3 handfulls of pecans a braid of Roses hair. Told her It be filled with my Love always she never saw her again Ashley is my grandmother Ruth Middleton 1921”
Because there is little in the historical record of the enslaved people, this cotton sack is important. It hangs in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), in Washington, D.C. The author tells the story behind this artifact.
This book recounts the experience of African Americans whose lives were mostly under-recorded or misunderstood.

This is one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read. It is one of those books that impacted me in a way that I hadn’t expected, and I’m left rather speechless. Tiya Miles is a skillful writer, researcher, and storyteller. I learned so much more about the history of the Southeast United States than I learned in all of my years in school. It truly is miraculous that Ashley’s sack survived generations. I am grateful to Tiya Miles for undertaking the project of writing this book for the betterment of the public. I am humbled. I highly recommend this book.

This was a difficult read for me. I know I'm not the brightest bulb in the tool shed, but the writing was a struggle for me. It was a whole lot of words to say a whole lot of nothing. My thoughts never stayed with the books and I had to reread so many parts.
My biggest issue with the book would be that is more about slavery in South Carolina than Rose or Ashley, which is completely understandable. I picked the book up thinking is was going to be a family history book following Rose. Maybe that's why my thoughts never stayed with me while trying to read. It is still a very informative read. I learned so much about a dark part of American history.
