A perfectly creepy book to begin October with.

Beautifully illustrated and well told. I think I'm a little too old to be the audience, but I would have been all over this if I had read it immediately when I bought it.

A story about loneliness. A dual narrative in dual timelines. The art style encompassed the tone of the story. Overall a lot creepier than I had expected

Fruktansvärt bra, och ruggigt tragisk berättelse som kommer stanna kvar i tankarna ett bra tag framöver.

I couldn't put this book down.
Thornhill tells the story of two lonely girls, Mary and Ella. Mary's story, set in 1982, is told through a series of diary entries which express how lonely she is and how the she is having to deal with girls that are bullying her. Ella's story, set in 2017, is told through pictures. the creepy part is how the two girls' lives intersect. I noticed the use of elements in the photo to set the stage for "creepy" such as ravens, spiders, etc. but not in an exaggerated manner.

We need to normalize beating the crap out of our bullies.

This book takes a while to pick up, the bulk of the action occurs during the last hundred and fifty pages. The ending felt rushed. The plot twist felt like it was for the sake of plot twist and didn’t match the narrative that was being built. The ending contradicts Mary’s character as a whole. While I enjoy the gothic elements of the book, this is a forgettable read.

I do want to read “The Secret Garden” now though.

This book is very atmospheric, black and white drawings with sporadic text, cleverly put together to show emotion, tension, pain and suffering.
Unfortunately this type of story has played out across all forms of media since the 1970s and yet still pulls at heart strings and we hear ourselves saying "how can we let that happen".
Stories like this help to raise awareness, build safeguarding on an individual subconscious level. It's one we all should take notice of and look out for in our own lives.
