The Black Church summarizes the history of the Black church in America. While Christianity is the main focus, there are also sections about the Nation of Islam and other religions. The text includes mostly primary sources, but has more personal contributions and interpretation than Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow. I thought the sections describing the church's involvement with the Civil Rights movement were particularly well done. I appreciate that the book addressed homophobia and general conservatism within the church communities, but I've read deeper analysis in other materials. Still, this was a well-written book that did an excellent job drawing connections between past and present and examining big picture trends.
