I was quite disappointing by the evolution of the main characters because I was hoping for something else, something more interesting and developed .
I find that Helen -which appears at the beginning to be a great and promising character- deserved more development. The evolution of Helen and Gwyn is clearly unbalanced for me. It was like Helen as soon as she arrived in NZ lost her personality .. It was all the more frustrating when George came back as if he had fallen from the sky (I had completely forgotten about this character who only appears in the very first pages). As far as Lucas is concerned my little heart is still crying..
I guess their destinies are sadly realistic. (And it was soooo frustrating!!)
To me the real strong point of the book is the description of the country: I felt transported to the land of the long white cloud with its farms, its small villages, the “cohabitation” between Maoris and British colonists is treated in a very interesting way.
