NYT Notable Books 2023: 19/100

I used to LOVE character-driven books where not a whole lot happened, but evidently that's changed, since I really struggled with this one. I felt like there was no plot but also little to no character development outside of Lara. I knew nothing about any of her daughters, and even less about her husband, all of whom were relevant to the story. Even major events just kind of came and went with a brief mention which made me keep flipping back to make sure I'd actually read what I thought I'd read. I read an essay collection by Patchett a few years ago and it was ok, but maybe her writing style isn't for me.

Lovely story about a mom, her daughters and their perception of each other. Interesting to think that the pandemic is now historical fiction which I thought Patchett used well to tell the sweet story of the routines, benefits and community that comes with a calming simple life.

I started reading this in print and then got a copy on audio through Everand. I’d heard that Meryl Streep’s narration was really good, and I agree. It was great! I liked the family picking cherries during the pandemic, and I liked the story the mom told from the summer of 1998, although it made me uneasy! You can see from the beginning, that summer set the trajectory for the lives of those involved. A contemplation on the road not taken and choices made that make a good life.
