This whole book felt like it just sets up the rest of the series.

We learn ALL the families and politics and underground stuff that goes on. You get to know all the characters in great depth—and they’re all great characters by the way, but all the book tags for this like forbidden romance, magic, etc are all mere breadcrumbs and a whisper of things to come so it just made everything feel like it moved at a really slow pace.

I feel like things start to really pick up at the last 20% of the book but definitely had enough momentum to keep me invested enough to want to continue this series, hope book two comes out soon.

The book gets really interesting in the last 20%, but the beginning has a lot of world-building, which can be a bit heavy. It's not bad, just takes some getting used to. I do enjoy the story, especially with the familiar Cassandra Clare vibes in a more grown-up setting.
