This book surprised me with its sweetness and its complexity. I didn't LOVE the ending, to be honest, but it was a good story.
Emmeline has lived alone with her father on their literal deserted island for her whole life, learning how to thrive and how to use her nose and powers of observation to help her in all situations....until everything changes. My heart broke for her over and over again as she tried to navigate the bigger world of the Cove, and then the even bigger world. She makes mistakes, but is truly on her own journey.
My own sense of smell is likely my weakest sense. It was actually quite fascinating to read about Emmeline's attention to detail in her scent-ing, and how much complexity there is that I think I might be missing.

I couldn’t put this book down!! I went to a perfume museum on a whim last summer in Paris. I found learning about the training and knowledge of perfumers so neat; e.g. the base notes/high notes they must learn and study is quite a fascinating and difficult process. So this book was a perfect fit, it is much more about Emmeline and her journey with scents. I loved the alliteration used in this novel that the author uses to describe Emmeline’s explanation of scents. Scents truly do have “feelings” and “different moods”

That book was something else. Mysterious at first then it all gets clear. It doesn’t really fit into a category. It’s a whole sensorial experience.

I really wanted to like this book. I liked the first half, but then it started to go downhill for me. I just wanted to finish it to figure out what happens. It seemed like a lot to fit into one small book. It also didn’t seem realistic. Like, wouldn’t Colette and Henry maybe tried to find Emmeline’s mom and other family members?

I enjoyed a large portion of the book, the first part had me in tears, the second part was also pretty good. The third part though was not very strong and that ending... It was so sudden it felt like pages were missing. I really really disliked it and it ruined the book a bit for me, way too much left unanswered.
