I felt like a lot didn’t happen in this book and it was a lot of Auren complaining about life. I’m glad that she started to take charge of her life and see that she has been consistently failed by the men she encounters
Spoilerother than Sail. I loved him

I don’t really like Midas and I don’t trust him. He gives me the ick and seems emotionally manipulative to someone who is naive and traumatized. I hope to see Auren get him in the future.

I’m intrigued enough to continue but this book was a little meh for me.

I think it is misleading to label this book a romance. This book would also require trigger warnings. If you are aware what you are getting into, it could be a good read but I fear the marketing gets people into the book with wrong expectations leading them to misunderstand and dislike the book. Overall I thought it was insightful and could be a really good story about abuse and how it changes the abused. It could help understand why victims act the way they do and how ones worldview can be corrupted by years of abuse. I have not read any other books of the series so I do not know how it progresses.

A surprisingly good read with a strong plot and and intriguing world building for its genre. Can’t wait to read GLINT to see what happens to Auren next ⚜️

Spoiler I should've stopped reading on page one when I learned that the harem was called saddles. But alas I continued, and I will never get the hours back that I spent reading this book.

My takeaways:
FMC has TENTACLES. another spot I should've just shut the kindle down at.
A golden cage is still a cage. This is repeated constantly, just in case you forget.
All men are r-pists and/or don't care about women. The 1-2 who aren't were killed off, because men are bad or they're dead.
Bright side? Bright side.
The use of the word "cum" thrown in for shock effect when there's actually very little cursing in this book.
Did anything actually happen in this book? I blacked out around tentacles.
FMC was whiny, useless, and overall unlikable. The author did a great job telling us how things felt rather than showing us through emotion on the page. I felt like I was watching a TV show rather than reading a book. Which, if this is a device where we readers are watching FMC through the cage and in subsequent novels gets better as she breaks free, that's incredible. But I'm not going to waste money buying the rest to find out.
The author felt like she had a point about grooming, trafficking, poverty, and misogyny, but missed the mark entirely. Perhaps these opinions would be best spent on nonfiction writing or opinion pieces rather than... Whatever this was.

F*ckin tentacles, man. </Spoiler>

I think I got around 10% in and DNF’d it.

I then VERY VAGUELY skimmed the rest of the book. By that, I mean I searched up summaries, reviews, and recaps and then did not regret sticking this one out.

I think this book has the most serious trigger warnings I’ve read (/skimmed). TW FOR DESCRIPTIVE RAPE SCENE. Ya I’m good with avoiding that thanks. I found the writing very juvenile to an almost mocking degree. It sometimes came off more satirical of a dark fantasy romance, rather than and *actual* dark fantasy romance.

I’ve heard each book gets better; I might continue, I might not. But I know for sure I won’t continue any time soon.

Was really loving this in the first half — the romance was just dark enough to be fun and not to be completely disgusted — but the pirate plot in the second half threw me off 😅 Already obsessed with the Commander though — can't really be a dark romance with a blonde love interest, can it?

Nope. I would have given up if a friend hadn’t recommended this to me for spice and fantasy. The spice is awful. Misogyny, cruelty, patriarchy and traumatising violence.

World building was meh. The book is far too longer for the amount of plot and character interactions. The first person narrative isn’t working for me either. And there is also the lazy use of perceived ugliness/beauty as a measure of villain.

Sail and Digby were part of the brief interlude that I enjoyed.
