This book was a little difficult to get in to as the beginning seemed pretty slow paced. After the first 100 pages or so it picked up a bit. The plot of the story is very interesting, using parts of actual New Orleans history mixed with fiction. There isn't a ton of character development, we mostly learn about the MC Adele and part of her family history, which ends up being pretty crucial. I enjoyed the parts of the book where Adele is translating her great-great-great and so on grandmother's diary, we get to read what has happening to her in that time period and how it relates to what Adele is going through in modern day. All in all I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to finding out what happens in the next as this leaves you wanting to know more!

Not sure why I read these books when I dislike teenage drama so much. I role my eyes more often than I can count when reading YA. I swear some scenes and characters were just thrown in to remind us we were following a teenage girl. They had little if any value to the story and were more distracting than anything.

That said, I do know why I continued to read this particular book and will read the sequel: Historical-ish fiction. I enjoyed learning about the casquette girl custom, exploring post hurricane New Orleans, reading 300 year old journal entries, a new vampire origin story, and the twist ending.

I kind of wish I read the book before visiting New Orleans though. I think I would have appreciated the post hurricane status of the city much more.

As someone that actually lives in New Orleans, I was excited for this to be based on our lore and history. However it felt like it was written by a tourist who has lived visited a few times and thinks that they know our culture and then did the quickest google search ever, yet did no actual research. My eyes where starting to hurt with how much I was rolling them at the amount of shit wrong or out of context.

Great fun, very Anne Rice-ish (circa Interview with Vampire) - definitely looking forward to the sequel.

*second round, on audio: I'm not crazy about how the reader does the men's voices (especially Adele's father - who is annoying anyway) but overall, a great ride.

Great magical fun

I loved the backdrop of New Orleans in this book and the way the author tied together the history of the city with the present. It did feel like a bit of character overload at times- theres just a very large cast, but a great story overall.

Excellent writing, story and atmosphere. Can't wait to read The Romeo Catchers. Alys Arden writes pure magic! New Orleans is brought to life and becomes it's own character in this rich story. Highly recommend
