i will never forget this reread, it meant so much to me :( miss garber KNOWS how to write a story that will draw you in and break your heart and stitch it back up all within five hundred pages😭
i often relate books to the periods that i originally read them in the first time and this one is connected to memories that are sort of the same vibe of the story - sad, but better by the end.
in legendary we follow our baby donatella dragna, the sister of our main character from caraval. at the end of the first novel it's revealed that miss tella got herself into a bit more than she thought when trying to save scarlett from marrying the count that she didn't even know and herself from the hands of their wicked father. following these events from the last book, we see the mess that she truly landed in and that the new caraval game headed to the capital is different than the past versions - this one is real. we were constantly reminded in the first book that it was all just a game and to not be swept top far away, but in this one it's said from the very start that everything that takes place will be as real as real can get. the fates are back and are read to be free once more but legend craves power. tella is going to dangerous lengths to find her missing mother, paloma (...if that's even her real name🤫) and she is faced with difficult choices👀

one thing that annoyed me was scarlett. i feel like she completely contradicted her character in the first book. she made me really mad at times.
i found the ending a little predictable. since the first book i suspected dante was legend. there were some aspects that i didn’t expect. i did NOT expect dante to save her and then just leave like nothing happened with them. that broke my heart.

Tells doesn’t romanticize the world as much as Scarlett, but she’s not without her boy troubles.
We finally get to meet Jacks. Having read OUABH first, I already had my opinions formed of him.
I also really enjoy seeing Scarlett and Julian’s relationship from Tella’s POV. From Scarlett’s perspective, the reader might also question whether it is all real, but from Tella’s perspective you can really see how much Julian cares for Scarlett.
This installment was much better than the first and I’m looking forward to Finale. I think I’ll actually read OUABH and TBONA again before the last one comes out.
Moderate: Death, Grief, Death of parent, and Murder

As Tella grew more desperate in her plight and more willing to sacrifice bits of herself to be an active agent in her own story, I started to understand her more and I grew to like her even more than Scarlett. Tella is so spicy and she's not afraid to fight literally anybody, and I love that about her.
Also, as someone who started this series by reading Once Upon A Broken Heart, Jacks absolutely steals the scene any time he's on the page. It's fun to see this earlier iteration of him - a villain playing a game that he's already lost by the first time I met him.
Also, I really enjoy the fact that Dante is mean to be the "better" of the two love interests, but also there's not really a love triangle, and also he's an asshole and a bastard anyway. Donatella's attraction to him is so real, but as he bares himself to her, her love for him makes sense, too.
As always, the biggest thing in a book I fall in love with is the characters and their relationships. Stephanie Garber writes a brilliant morally-grey character in every page of her stories. Her prose is fun and unique, and her metaphors are really unique and stick out in your mind so strongly. It's been really enjoyable to go back and see where her writing started compared to where it is now. Ugh, I love her.
