Extremely moving and beautifully written.

I like the concept and structure, and the richness of the description is wonderful. But it's almost too rich, there's absolutely no breathing space in this book. This makes it really hard to keep engaging as it comes across as a but unrelenting and one-note.

THIS should have won Man Booker, even with the prize’s obnoxious taste.

A very moving and emotional book. Interestingly set in Istanbul, about people who live on the outside, who do not fit the norms of society, through choice, but mostly because they do not fit into a normalised world and are shunned for their difference. The author's choice to use the last 10 minutes and 38 seconds of Leila's life to tell the story of her life was an inspirational touch. While Leila and her 5 friends are victimised in so many ways, this is a story of resilience, and of friendships. Highly recommended.

Така щира але сумна історія, зі спокійним серцем читати неможливо

A very strange book. Definitely not for everyone. Characters (prostitute, trans woman, little person, sex marketed woman from Africa, battered woman from Eastern Europe and one regular dude) who form a friendship with Tequila Leila being the central person who was the gel of the group. TL is murdered yet her brain is active for 10 minutes, 38 seconds which gives her time to reflect on her life. When she’s dead dead, she’s buried in the Cemetery for the Companionless. Yep, it’s a weird story.

A harrowing tale of outcasts in Türkiye, their deep friendship, and the tragic fate of one of them. What stands out is the originality of the storytelling mechanics. As always, Shafak's beautiful and poignant prose is on full display, making this a compelling read.
