Summary: This autobiography tells the story of the life of Tara Westover, who was raised in near isolation with her six siblings by highly religious parents who trusted neither the medical establishment nor the government. As a child, Tara did not attend school and did not have a birth certificate until the age of nine.
Her story is at times shocking, and readers who may have experienced any kind of physical or domestic abuse should be made aware that this book may be difficult to read.
Moderate: Child abuse

I read some reviews by people who only gave this book one star, and I am flabbergasted. One woman said this memoir is loaded with contradictions...what?! I thought this book was honest and beautiful, filled with Dr. Westover’s memories. Trauma does that to you; it flips, warps, sautés, and even sometimes burns the memories you have of the past. I did not find inconsistencies or inaccuracies; I saw a woman rise from the ashes of her oppressive, cult-like parents and family.
What an amazing read and one I’m sure will stick with me forever, just as other memoirs I’ve read in the past have.
