I love the worlds Pullman creates but this was very slow to get started and then just as it was starting to get interesting, the book ends very suddenly. It does make me very excited for book 3, but it was pretty disappointing after how good book 1 was.

The Secret Commonwealth is such an engrossing read. Once you get past the halfway mark, the action really starts to move on several fronts and the novel becomes extremely difficult to put down. Like all novels by this writer, the story is multifaceted and well written. His world build is second to none in the speculative fiction genre. After reading the original trilogy when it was first out now some 20 plus years ago, I never really expected to be able to join Lyra and her friends (and enemies) on another fun adventure but here we are and I'm most grateful to be able to read these.

So so good!! Philip Pullman continues the journey in the amazing world(s) that Lyra, Pan and co inhabit. So many levels to this book and one of the best I have read in a long while.

Listened to this on Audible. Fantastic narration!

Some of this rose oil business is absurd. But I believe it’s intentional, as it certainly drives the point home.

Anyway, it’s like the Golden Compass all grown up. Quite enjoyable.

Really weird book?
Feels like there’s lots of messages the author is trying to send but didn’t understand most of them.
Age gap relationship is so odd and out of nowhere.

Definitely a slow start but picked up at the end. Very much a first half of a full story with the expected final book.

I slammed through the first book in this new Pullman series--couldn't keep my hands off of it. This one was also good, but I took it much more slowly.

It is a relatively huge book, but that pacing was also very different. There weren't the cliffhanger chapter endings and there was a lot more going on outside of the main Lyra plotline. So, this was a very different book from the others thus far. I'm very interested to see how things conclude.
