I could not connect with this story but I soldiered on. I would like to have seen deeper development of the main characters and a more thoughtful exploration of the impacts of embedded/implanted/bio-integrated technologies on them and throughout humanity. As with most other galactic empires stories, the extrapolations of current technology and other trends feel shallow and out of phase with what would likely be required for any galactic civilization to come about and to continue. I get that the goal may be to tell a big space war story with the requisite special effects. This fell a bit flat for me. Still, the writing is competent overall. Readers who come to military sci-fi for martial action should enjoy this series starter.
