Maya Angelou is a master of her craft, and I loved reading her full collection of poetry. She really pierces the soul. Her poems are very considered down to word choice and line spacing. I expanded my vocabulary a lot by reading this book. I recommend looking for videos of her reciting her own poetry to supplement your reading; no one can bring life to her words like she can.

10/10 required reading, objectively amazing.

Poetry is always a very interesting thing. You’ll read and read and nothing major jumps out at you, and then all of the sudden one poem punches you in the gut. That’s how it felt reading this book. Maya Angelou is the best if the best when it comes to poetry. Her works for Oprah’s birthday and acknowledging Nelson Mandela’s death were breathtaking, along with, of course, Still I Rise.

March 2015 - Listening to the Audiobook read by Maya Angelou herself - which really feels like such a great way to experience it

Feb 2017 - Sometimes you have to go back to the good ones - so great to be listening to her words with all that is going on in the world.

Just glorious. Angelou's poetry ranges from fun to poignant to ceremonial. Her use of language is, of course, an inspiration.
