Not gonna lie, I was prepared to be let down by this book. To my surprise I actually was okay with how Jade grew up and developed. There are definitely points throughout the book that dragged on, but OMG to see Xifeng grow up into the evil queen was everything! If that wasn't enough, we get to collect relics scattered in the forest with beautifully written folklore to go with them. This series is not hyped up enough. Recommending this for fans of Snow White, East Asian folklore, or ya quest fans.

I don't know why so many seems to hate this duology... I enjoyed them so much! The writing is good and easy, plot interesting and different on it's own way, and a villain that I love to hate 😁

This duology is without a doubt one of my favourite fantasies I’ve ever read.
It’s beautifully and intricately written and yet so easy to read. The world is stunning and immersive, without being too heavily described. It features one of the most brilliantly developed and fantastically written villains I have ever read and a cast of multidimensional characters who instantly pull you into the story.

The magic system is unique and easy to follow and the over-lining plot is utterly addictive, with nods to the story of Snow White and the Evil Queen subtly and cleverly woven into the pages. Without spoiling book one, book two in this duology is utterly stunning, with stunning stories within stories, addictive quests, wonderful friendships and strong women.

The Rise of the Empress duology is fast paced, beautifully written and absolutely wonderful. Overall, I’m devastated this duology has come to an end but I loved every moment of it.
(But also, please can I get a series about the Crimson Assassins please and thank you?)

I want more!!!!

This series was done so well. Asian fantasy as a twist on Snow White. This book focused on Jade, the rightful heir of Feng Lu. Her journey to reunite the relics of the Dragon lords to fight against Xifeng was full of twists and turns.

The characters are well developed and the story is intriguing and engaging. I love Dao's writing style and you absolutely root for Jade the whole way. Can't wait to read more of her work.
