The characters were okay.

Lilia sometimes read as a Mary-Sue with the way she seemd to always be able to get the upperhand on the other characters around her, even those in positions of power above her. At times, she said or did something and it would make me shake my head because that’s not how it would work in the “real world”, which is the time this story is set in (contemporary).

Devryck jumped right into his possessiveness over Lilia, and while I love me some possessive and territorial MMC, I didn’t feel like his character arc supported that depth of feeling so quickly. I definitely also got borderline sociopath vibes from him due to his willingness to do whatever it took to further his own agenda and protect what was his.

The sex scenes were A++. Definitely a level of kink that might be a surprise for some readers, but plays into the author’s depiction of Devryck and his possessiveness. I wish the rest of the book was as good as the sex scenes honestly because you don’t find a lot of these kinks (

choking, voyeurism/exhibitionism

in gothic romantasy books — or really, any romance novels.

The plot was way more complicated than it needed to be, with certain characters having issues that I felt weren’t needed to further the plot as a whole. There were a couple of twists that were unfortunately given away by obvious context clues, and I’m not a reader who overly analyzes the plot and what I’m reading. I’ve never found a plot hole on my own without another reader mentioning it and then I’m like, oh yeah, lol.

The writing and plot were of a higher quality than I expected for this genre. Very dark at points! I enjoyed the slow burn romance alongside a complex plot.

would be a 5⭐️ read if it wasn’t for the beginning which was really hard to get into as it was describing a lot of different things with an unreliable mc to deal with. additionally, sometimes some things were too descriptive which I understand adds to the charm and aesthetics of the book but sometimes you just wanted the plot because with these two you couldn’t get enough. totally loved this dark academia book, also if you liked this one, read gothikana!! 🖤 also i need an extended epilogue WTF please😭

I really enjoyed this wild ride. I thought finishing 600 pages in three days was going to be difficult. The last couple 600+ pagers took over a week to get through, but I could not put this book down.

Wasn't expecting it to be as much of a horror/thriller as it was, but the gothic atmosphere and the twisted mystery the author interwove gripped me at every turn.

Age gap romance is a penchant of mine, but it can be difficult to find done well. This book nails it and then smothers you with a couple really scorching sex scenes. The tension and build up to that point was perfect for me.

Where this book loses points is at the end. There is a final, very large twist which had the potential to be really fulfilling, but it felt rushed and underdeveloped. Overall, it's the perfect ending, but the execution was an 8.5 instead of a 10.

Will absolutely be grabbing her other book Master of Salt & Bones in short order. Very impressed by this first step into Keri Lake's catalogue.
