This book was amazing! The storytelling and world building were endlessly engaging! I hope there will be more books set in this world where magic, the supernatural, and Ellie’s Lipan Apache culture all come together.

I enjoyed this novel, it was a different take on a lot of different mythologies... I enjoyed that aspect a lot.

I also like that our teen protagonist didn't just go through a journey, she did it WITH her family and their support, that was cool.

really enjoyed this! the characters, the world-building, the history, the way the parents stayed involved and were supportive instead of being oblivious and disengaged. I liked the way that magic worked. yes, I agree, the main characters felt much younger (12-14 instead of 17), but it didn't bother me.

I really loved the image of the ocean and the stories of Six-Great. there were some interesting ideas about death and grief; for example, not being able to think about or name the dead. how do you grieve? and, as much as I absolutely love my cats, if I could keep the ghost of my first cat forever, I never would have gotten the next two, and they needed a home. (of course, not everyone has this same gift.)
Spoilerand the end of the story was a nice compromise that addressed exactly this.
definitely thought-provoking.

I also loved the author's story about the first book she ever wrote and her dad's support. very cute.

this seems like it could be the start of a series...
