The first 60% of this book was 4 stars for me, even with some eh moments mixed in. I was really interested in both Katrina and Jas, thought their experiences were well put and reasoned, and I wanted to learn more about both their families and backgrounds. But when Katrina and Jas finally open up about their feelings, the transition to 'couple' was clunky and honestly weird at best. Other issues also often overshadowed the romance, and instead of helping to develop their relationship, it made any progress they had feel disjointed.

There were scenes that were simply awkward (what even was that hay/water balloon scene?), unrealistic (when his grandpa pretended to be sick and planned to stay in that hospital for so long, it seemed excessive and didn't really fit his chatacter), and cliche - which you'd expect with a romance, except they were oddly placed and the feelings and thoughts expressed often didn't make sense.

The pacing was all over the place towards the end and many things were wrapped up with such a quick scene and shallow reasoning, it was pretty unsatisfying.

I did really enjoy some parts of this book, but in the end, the parts that were bad were just really bad.

I really really liked this book. All I want from life is well-fleshed out characters with detailed cultural backgrounds and Alisha Rai gave me that in leaps and bounds. I would read so much more about Jas' family and how they live their life up in Northern California. (Did not know about Yuba City, fascinating!)

I wish we got to see the parade, if only because I miss Indian-type parades (visarjans and the like). Love the friendships Katrina has with different women in her life, and how Katrina knows when to stand up for herself and then lean on her friends after. Beautiful!

I really loved The Right Swipe, but enemies-to-lovers is my favorite trope. This book took me longer to get into. At a certain point I just wanted to yell at them to talk to each other! But I did like the characters; they had real world problems to work through. The idea of right to privacy in public places was thought provoking. I'll definitely check out more from this author.

This is the second book of the series.  I thought this was going to go differently, but I'm enjoyed it being a forbidden romance, employer boss romance.  Girl Power and empowering all the other women in book.  Someone friends have your interest better than your own blood family. I love the diversity of the friend group.  Each struggling with their own mental health issues, but able to support the others.  Girl Power is a key theme throughout the series.
