The blurbs say that this is about a woman who rose from poverty to become a wealthy and powerful madame. And it is, sort of. But it is really about how close each of us is to becoming unmoored, and what hat looks like, and how it plays out over two generations of a diverse, loosely connected group of people. Shifting in time and POV without explicit notations, it can take several chapters to acclimate yourself. Don’t give up.
