This book started interesting, but never quite picked up for me.  Truly a depressing dystopia, which can sometimes make for a good read, but man, this one's a bummer.  The central mystery wasn't interesting enough for me to slog through the story of mostly bad people doing bad stuff.  Also, the introduction of the eponymous wind-up girl is rough stuff.  I get that the author wanted to convey cruelty and dehumanization in her story, but the detail was unnecessary IMO.

It picked up steam in the second half but I still wasn't all that invested. It was an intriguing world and not badly written it just never grabbed me like I expected.

Fantastic book. Believable but fantastical future Earth. Great Thai culture. I have already applied the concept of The Expansion/Contraction to my worldview because it's that relevant.

Good world. Poor characters and too many stereotypes. Orientalism is a huge theme here. Lots of terminology I. Other languages to add distance between the reader and the situation. Othering. One use of the slur "Chinaman." There is one strong female characters. Mostly, the women are described as creatures. Even the white girl at the end. Lots of rape. I liked the technology the best. Otherwise, very few qualities I liked. I was looking forward to reading it and was hugely disappointed.

Might pick this up later. I dropped it for a while and have lost the plot and characters. It's also not what I expected from this author.

I didn't think I would like this book. I usually don't read Dystopian.

But, this is one of those books that you don't want to put down once you start reading it.

It takes place in Thailand. The world has been devastated by global warming and diseases.

The ending is surprising. You don't really see it coming.
