(Reread on audio) MY GOD THIS BOOK!!!! Helen Hoang I am in your walls.
This is not a lighthearted romance (jail to anyone using that tag here???). Anna deals with a LOT of really hard things throughout the book. But everything that happens, while difficult to read, is handled with such raw realness. Quan is everything and I will protect him bodily forever.

I freaking loved this. I loved it. And there is no doubt in my mind that Nadalie Naudus’ exceptional narration just added to the appeal. All the gender essentialist and irritating miscommunication tropes of the Bride Test were fixed here - it’s like Hoang heard all my notes and then wrote the exact book I wanted. I was anxious and stressed for the characters, I cried multiple times, I felt physically upset. I am so invested in this world, and tbh Quan might be my favourite guy of the bunch. Absolutely fabulous and I promise the audiobook is worth every second. (PS Brian Nishii does do a good job, I have just never heard a narrator strike the perfect balance of emotionally performing and narrating as Naudus did)

I liked this book but it was a much heavier read than the other two. I felt the female lead had way more screen time than the male lead and would have liked this a bit better balanced. The family dynamics of the female lead were challenging for me as they were so toxic.

This is nothing I expected it to be. If you want a book about extreme mental roadblocks to standing up for yourself and emotional fatigue, this is the book for you. If you want a romance anything like Hoang's previous books, maybe look for something different or reread the first two in the trilogy because this book is the farthest thing from being romantic, even though there is technically a relationship starting within these pages. It fell flat for me and I needed to skip through entire sections because I was simply bogged down with annoyance and frustration for the situation and choices the main character made. The Heart Principle is an extremely dense book that has you wading through medical trauma, abusive relationships, and a majorly emotionally taxing undertaking.
