spoilers (i think)

a woman basically goes mad because of how restrained she is by her husband and the patriarchal ways of society. she’s having a horrible case of some kind of mental disorder (my theory is depression, anxiety, or maybe even schizophrenia) and her husband being a physician is debunking her thoughts even though she knows something is wrong her. there’s a woman in the walls, she suspects, and by the end the woman is freed from the walls.. she is the woman, by the way. she describes how the woman looks as if she’s trying to break out of the patterns on the wallpaper. it’s one big metaphor or symbol and i like that about this book.

Very glad to have finally read this. A short story (about half an hour to read) about a woman falling into psychosis. Well written and compelling. I loved how the feelings of detachment were written, and how vivid the setting of this room with the yellow wall paper is imagined. Overall, a very tangible story, and I'd love to explore woman's writing of this period with a class some day!!

Powerful short story of an unsettling descent into madness. I felt like screaming along with her.Â
