Wow. I...this feels like a cross between Cormac McCarthy and Stephen King. And I'm talking Child of God/Blood Meridian McCarthy.
Essentially, a boy is growing up in a family where they abduct, murder, and eat young women. That's the gist of it. I think what makes this special is that the main character is having a sort of coming-of-age moment and starts to really wonder if his life could be different. At the same time, he's living with a mother and father who are brutal at best and a brother who is a complete psychopath.
This book should come with a giant trigger warning. It talks about family abuse (all of it...sexual, physical, neglect, etc.), possible incest, murder, cannibalism, rape, etc. I think the author does a good job of showing what is happening when necessary, but not diving into the details at times in a perverted of navel-gazing way. All of it serves to inform who these people are and why they do what they do.
And the end. Good grief. What an ending.

Really enjoyed this book and the writing style.
The twist? Holy shit. I didn’t expect all that. And the ending? Wow.. completely blown away.
I really liked Michael. Only wish he got a happy ending.
