This was so layered and the art is everything.

A graphic novel retelling of an ancient Breton folktale.

Definitely a favourite sub-genre of mine: it combines two of my favourite things (1) art and (2) folktales lol how can I not love it?

Why just three stars, then? I wanted more detail! My heart felt for the characters and the story ended before I could come to terms with what had transpired. I often feel this way after reading graphic novels... I just wanted to know more. See more. But I do appreciate the open(ish) ending.

Be warned, it was definitely a darker YA; the story tends to focus on the flaws of the main characters, and how they lose themselves (and each other) to these flaws. Personally, I feel like better communication, and regular therapy to work through emotions, would have benefited everyone and likely prevented the book's worst-case-scenarios. But then we wouldn't have a story, I guess. And, really, folktales are meant to make the readers/listeners reflect. So, in the end, it did its job well.

TW: abuse, murder, death, gore.

The artwork is 5 stars, but the story doesn't quite hold up it's end of the bargain. The transitions were abrupt, the characters weren't fully fleshed out, and the world building was lacking. If the story was given more time to build and unfold - an additional 100 pages or so - it could have been much stronger.

With all that said, I still really enjoyed the retelling of the myth and am now curious to read some of the original versions if I can find them in English. The story was dark, but I felt that was necessary since it's moral, in this adaptation at least, was about the violence necessary to maintain empire and how the pursuit of power over others will destroy you and those you love in the end.

Beautifully illustrated, and definitely reads like a more modern interpretation of a fairy tale. I'm not sure how I feel about the characters.
