Young adults and middle-grade audiences having books they can connect to on various topics, including tough ones like eating disorder recovery, is urgent. However, this book would not be amongst my top recommendations for patrons and families, if only because the characters lack a lot of depth, and the side characters/support system are portrayed as completely unaware and uninvested (which does not change too much in the end). I think I was left confused on the purpose of the book (is it about the protagonist's descent? their identity and perceived role as a "smart girl,"? the family divorce and dynamics? A book can certainly contain all, but a but of focus can be helpful) but it is a quick read nonetheless.

Literally read this in one sitting. Well, an hour of productive lying down. I couldn't sleep last night so I decided to give this a try.

I didn't think I'd be into this because I don't really like reading in verses. I like my stories in paragraphs but surprisingly, this worked for me. The writing made it easy for me to finish this quick and read the story faster.

The problem with verses, though, is the limited space for dialogues. I want to read more conversations between Ivy and the people she interacts with daily, but it's hard to get a glimpse of her relationship with anyone because of the lack of dialogues. It just felt like the readers were living inside Ivy's mind 100% of the time, which I'm sure could be the intention of the writer.

I enjoyed this tho and it shed a light regarding some of the things I didn't know I should really be paying attention to now. I, too, am on a very strict diet and programmed fasting, which could soon border into disordered eating. Last year, I went thru a medical exam and surprised to find out the lowest BP I had in years. I didn't pay much attention to it until I read this and found out that a low BP (and low hemoglobin count, which I had as well) could be the effects of disordered eating and too much dieting.

Thank God I picked up this book. Now, I have to pore over my dieting regime and go thru everything I'm not doing correctly.

This Impossible Light is a novel in verse about a girl named Ivy and her struggles after her parents’ divorce. It’s a heavy read subject-wise, but it didn’t impress me.
I liked the poetry, there are some amazing, powerful lines hidden in the verses, and I liked how it was all organized. But it’s a before-seen plot, and those powerful lines aren’t enough to carry the filler ones. Not to mention, it continuously reminded me of The Princess Saves Herself in This One.
I thought I was going to love this book, I’m really bummed out that I didn’t.

Lily Myers does such a great job of really pulling you into Ivy's head in "This Impossible Light" and showing the way her self-image and sense of stability slowly crumble as she falls deeper into the stages of her eating disorder. This is a quick read, but a very effective one. I love the way Ivy reflects on very small details... family vacations... a fish shaped waffle iron that made Saturday mornings cozy... Myers does an outstanding job at making the comforting life she's mourning tangible and oh so easy to picture.

Written in verse, this tells the story of 15 year old Ivy as she tries to navigate her way through her parents divorce, her BFF slipping away from her, her body changing, and keeping up appearances as the Smart Girl in school. A poignant tale that I related to on multiple levels.

The book itself was very emotion and I connected to it a lot. The writing itself though was not very entertaining and way too fast paced.

I like how this was written. How the words played on the page. Story line was pretty short and not much meat to it, yet very enjoyable!
