I am so happy I read this book. While it was mostly set in Jamaica, I could relate to each of the short stories as someone from elsewhere in the Caribbean region. There are many themes shared across the eleven short stories in this book that speak to the nuanced and multifaceted nature of Jamaican people and culture. From overprotective (and sometimes overbearing) mothers to finding a sense of belonging, the author explores a series of themes experienced by Jamaicans both broad and at home, while constantly portraying Jamaica as home, a place of tranquility, to her characters.

"We eat our daughters" is probably my most favorite bit of the book, there are stories you can relate to and stories you empathize with. It's stories that make you know that every one of our stories is in place for a reason and it's all going to be okay.

I cannot rate this book highly enough. I am on the edge of my seat...waiting for Alexia Arthurs to publish another collection of short stories...please?

If nothing else, read the story "Shirley from a Small Place." It is full of emotion.
