I Am Human: A Book of Empathy by Susan Verde

A rare case where the author's note really didn't add anything for me. Then I did a little bit of research and discovered that Verde has written other books about meditation and yoga, some of them with Peter Reynolds. There is something about the illustrations that really resonates with me, from examining each face on the cover to the wonderful way Reynolds captures expressions. Perhaps my favorite message from this is that we all make mistakes, but we have the chance to do better.

I found it interesting that the book is dedicated to Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue.

First, I want to say I loved this book. It is beautiful and I loved the illustrations. I didn't think it was big on empathy though. I don't think what was written is about empathy as much as it is about just being a good person. I think those things are two different ways of being. But, it is a beautiful book and more people should read this.

Man, empathy is a tough one. I think this book was on the right track, with the setup being "hey, I'm just a person," followed by "people do not great things sometimes" and then "but you can also do good things." All of which is great. I felt like it kind of lost the kids' attention at some point, because the first two sections stole some of the light from the third part, which is the most important part to me. Not bad, but I'm wanting more.

This is a book I will have to add to our permanent collection. What a gorgeous book with a wonderful message! It is both simple and profound. It covers interconnectivity, kindness, mistake-making and forgiveness, caring, helping, self-confidence, creativity . . . LOVE this book!
