Peu d'expériences littéraires rivalisent avec l’intelligence, la profondeur et la mélancolie de cette œuvre, et dans sa caractérisation du souvenir et du sentiment d'aliénation dans les sociétés communistes d'après-guerre. Une réussite totale au fil des 800 pages d'une lecture exigeante qui refuse tout compromis. S'y dessine accessoirement l'une des relations homosexuelles les plus réalistes, sincères et touchantes que je n’ai jamais lues. Sans aucun doute à placer au panthéon des romans les plus brillants et forts du 20e siècle.

Absolutely incredible novel, one of the best I've read in a decade, easily in the top twenty of the last century.

can't do it. this looked very much my thing but i'm pulling up stumps at the 300 page mark. at least when proust obsessively details his interior life you get the feeling he's taking you somewhere worthwhile. but nadas's narrator is like a non-presence, despite dedicating multiple pages to the finer points of how finding his dad sleeping with the maid affected his sexual development. i dunno. it's so hot here and i spent most of the afternoon reading this and at the same time trying to figure out why it wasn't working for me. then the cat figured out how to play fetch by herself somehow so i put this down to play with her and now i can't pick it back up.
