This book was beautiful but painful to read even from the start. Just wow. Read it in about three hours in one sitting. And it's my first Steinback ever. I adored his way of descriptive writing as well. Might read more of his works not sooner or later

Without doubt, it's a simple story about a lot of things; about running from your problems, mental health, people who are hard to understand, and this book covers these things wonderfully, if only on the surface level. A classic for a good reason.

"man blir tokig om man inte har någon att vara med. Det gör detsamma vem det är, bara man får vara med honom. Jag ska tala om för dig, skrek han, att man blir sjuk om man är för mycket ensam.

I first read this book in high-school and the name of the book stuck with me but 20 years on I'd completely forgotten the storyline. Flash forward to a kindle 99p deal and a desire to revisit some of my childhood texts I gave this a go. Now I know why this book title stuck with me, it's depressing, challenging story filled with death, mental struggles, racism and misogyny is quite a memorable one. This 1937 book is well written, engaging, short and a page turner where white rich men rule all and everyone else tries to find their place inbetween. A historic piece of its time which will stick with me again I'm sure.
