I’ve nothing new or profound to say, nothing that hasn’t been said before, but I know books have helped me, saved me even, so perhaps this can help someone feel less alone, seen, no matter who they are or what journey they are on. Thank you for wanting to read about mine.

I absolutely loved this book. I'm a fan of memoirs — I especially love picking up the memoir of someone I don't know much about to discover more about their lived experience. In many cases, it's led to positively changing my perception of that person. Memoirs and autobiographies can be very powerful in this way.

I think listening to this book (as opposed to reading a physical copy) helped me a lot to connect with Elliott and his experience. I didn't know much about him going in, other than having seen him in Juno and occasionally seeing photos of him and hearing about his coming out; the audiobook version of this felt at times like having a conversation with a friend on deep and emotionally trying topics.
The writing was clear, beautiful and cohesive, and even though it was jumping a lot between childhood memories and recent or less recent experiences, it was still easy enough to follow.
I was surprised to hear how far back Elliott's relationship with trans-ness went; to know about all the years of doubt and second-guessing himself, of forcing himself into a physical image he did not relate to. It made me heartbroken for so many people, especially youth, who have to struggle with their self-image (like being a teen isn't already difficult enough). As a cisgender person, I can only make assumptions on how reading this book as a trans person must feel: maybe empowering, maybe filled with a sense of relief that you're not alone, anger and hope intertwined.

Extremely well written, Elliot has a talent when it comes to describing things that feel wordless. A brave telling of a tumultuous life
