I was so invested and entertained by this book start to finish. It reminded me so much of the kinds of Dark Gritty crime movies and TV shows I like to watch. Plus I really enjoyed uncovering the mystery with our main character Virgil. It’s been a minute since I read something like this but it really reminded me of Roadhouse (which is one of the best movies ever lol) I dunno if these types of books are my thing but this one 100% worked for me and I loved.

What a great book! I loved the intricate story and character development. It was interesting learning some Lakota history, and I look forward to learning more. I appreciated the author’s note at the end - don’t skip it! I sure hope there’s a sequel!

I had originally read this book during the HarperCollins strike and now that a contract is signed, I am posting my review now.

MAN this book was gripping.

This story follows Virgil Wounded Horse, a local “enforcer” on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He seeks justice when others have been denied it. When his nephew is endangered by some events on the reservation, he goes on a trip for vengeance and answers with his ex-girlfriend in tow. What happens is a thrilling story that evokes questions about American justice and what one does when the institutions have set to disenfranchise them.

I love a good thriller, and this one covered topics that I didn’t see before in other thrillers, let alone topics that gave you pause for thought. For someone who is not Native, it allowed me an instance to reflect on how differently the general system in this country is constructed for those who have been historically so disenfranchised. It also inspired me to think about my own definition of justice, and the plot itself captivated me because of how wonderfully fast paced and intriguing it was as a reader.

I give this five stars - great character development, invoking themes, and well paced thriller plot.
