like all anthologies, this was a mixed bag, but there was only one that i really didn't like, and the ones that were good were REALLY good. the 5 star stories are probably some of my favourite short stories of all time. there are also really beautiful illustrations after each story.

the anthology begins in a rather mundane way, the first story from the perspective of a regular octopus, and the second a contemporary story that holds no sci-fi or fantasy elements. but suddenly, we're plunged into a world of lovecraftian dark fantasy and sci-fi, and it is glorious. i'd definitely recommend it, but bear in mind there's a content warning for sexual assault in a late season snow, and attempted suicide in venus of the waves.

reproduction - 4 stars
a late season snow - 1 star.
obey the octopus - 4 stars
a stranger returns from an unexpected trip to the south china sea - 5 stars
talk to us - 4 stars
empathy evolving as a quantum of eight-dimensional perception - 5++ stars
unearthly pearl - 3 stars
daughters of tethys - 2 stars
the octopus garden - 3 stars
three hearted - 3.5 stars
vulgaris - 5 stars
venus of the waves - 5++++ stars. saved the best until last!
