This was my first Sabrina Jeffries and it has not encouraged me to read more. This almost felt like a caricature of Scottish romances. There were so many things that were not to my taste:
  • Venetia, who was held at gunpoint and bound in ropes, described Lachlan as "a perfect gentleman." This was such crazy delusion
  • Lachlan was awful. Constant pushing of boundaries,
taking her virginity when she wasn't sure of it, tricking her into marriage, then denying her in front of her whole clan for no valid reason at all
. I can deal with bodice rippers, but he was a massive child
  • The interpretation of Scottish men and a Scottish accent was not great. Within the same sentence, you'd see "you" and "ye." The phrase "Mo chreach" was used ad infinitum, perhaps because it was the only real phrase they knew?
  • All the women in this were characterised quite silly, even when they were supposedly very clever. Ridiculously frustrating.
  • Backfilling with the "I've always loved you" plot was just... 🙄
  • I found myself bored for a lot of this. I really should have just DNF'd but I've heard Sabrina Jeffries recommended enough that I felt I should give it a real shot.
