While all of these were fantastic (particularly when listening to the audiobook and hearing them read by Abdurraqib the way he envisioned as he wrote them) my favorites were “It is Maybe Time to Admit That Michael Jordan Definitely Pushed Off, “With Boxes Piled at the Foot of the Stairs, I Go to See Logan” and “Glamour on the West Streets/Silver Over Everything,” all which I had the privilege of hearing him read aloud when he visited my undergrad, and the last of the series of poems titled “It’s Not Like Nikola Tesla Knew All of Those People Were Going to Die.”

literally no one is doing it like hanif is, literally no one. so so good in a way that leaves me speechless. also, listened to the audiobook for this one, which was such a cool reading experience! loved hearing some back story on the poems before he read them.

Beautiful and sorrowsome. To quote another review (K. Queen): "As death insists on invading our lives, we keep making more and more beauty in order to survive it."

Hanif has become one of my favorite modern day poets. Always aiming for the gut yet making the reader feel it deep in the soul. Hands down, my honorable mentions are "No Diggity" and the "Ghost of Marvin Gaye" series.

Beautiful use of the page (think Kwame Alexander or Jason Reynolds, or even Sharon Creech). I would recommend this title to lovers of poetry and novel in verse, particularly those who are willing to take time to reflect, and want a short read that sticks with them for a while.

"I might undo the forest winding its way along the sides of my face so that I can more closely resemble a man worthy of waking to roses at his feet in a kill or be killed" (23)
