2 stars purely because it talks about gender roles in an interesting way for a 1928 novel. hated it though- so BORING. definition of no plot, no vibes.

I am torn whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars because it is beautifully written but also very slow, even a slog.

Truly, the marvelous excerpts from her mother's letters are the treasure of this slim little book. Even Colette says so! A bittersweet revelation of the freedom and delights of solitude after the disappointments of love. A fascinating contrast to all the Henry Miller i'd been consuming. I can only imagine how delicious this is in French. Ah, in another life…

dreamy, wandering, loving of plants and animals. sunlit with provencal beach heat and idiosyncratic summertime company. perfect for falling asleep inside of.

I read Break of Day for two reading challenges I am completing this year. I was interested in reading one of Colette's books as I recently watched a film based on her younger years and I became interested in her writing. Break of Day is a book she wrote in her fifties and it mostly reads as a stream of consciousness. I've read books similar to this and I can never quite get into them. I will say her writing (or at least the translation I read) was beautiful. It will be interesting to read some of her earlier works at some point, to compare to this later work.
