Beautiful and important! It's about sadness and hope and unconditional love and the desire to be free. It's a work of fiction, but you can tell that these stories are drawn from something genuine and real. Wonderfully written -- my heart went out to the characters almost immediately and I finished the book within a day.

Okay wow, this was a really good book. I had to read it for my global issues in lit class and I got so invested I finished it in 2 days rather than the 2 weeks we had. The ending was SO SAD, I am actually heartbroken. I felt like I was close to crying. Also, I really just loved the sense of community which was built in the book. These people came from all over, but they were in an apartment complex together living as a group, as a family, as a community. This book also dealt with other issues, and I did like that romance was not the main plot of it. I do feel like some things were left a little unfinished which makes me feel curious as to what happened with those. Overall, this was a good book!

I had to read this one for one of my lit classes and I actually ended up really enjoying it. It’s not one of those memorable books that you think about all the time, but it was phenomenally written and really showed the hardships that many Spanish and Mexican Americans have to deal with on a daily basis in the US. Great story!

I did not like this book. No, it was too short and too long all at once. It was a snippet out of the lives of these people, and only sad and negative ones. I understand that people’s lives are hard, even terrible, but I don’t enjoy books where sadness is the predominant theme. It went on and on with the stories of people who had made their homes in the US, and then ended so abruptly in such great tragedy.
The last chapter, was beautiful and a stroke of genius, but all the chapters up to that point were too disheartening. It wasn’t poorly written, the point was not lost on me, the themes I gathered, but I just couldn’t bear the gloom. It was a story if real life, every person seemed as though they could easily be found on the streets of Delaware, but there was no hope. I can bear sadness and terribleness and even realistic stories if there is hope. But there was not an ounce of hope for these people and that made it very difficult for me to enjoy any of the stories, beautiful as some were.
