I desperately wanted to like this. The end message (one world, one family, etc.) is fantastic, but getting there is SO CONFUSING. This is maybe a book for like an intermediate reader, but it would be extremely confusing to a kid learning numbers. It is extremely confusing to a bunch of children's librarians!

That being said, I LOVE the illustrations. They're simple but so beautiful and inclusive. That made it all the more heartbreaking that this book is otherwise not great. I will definitely seek out [a:Blanca Gomez|7741261|Blanca Gomez|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]' previous work and keep my eyes peeled for it in the future.

It was an okay read. I haven't decided if I will read it to my children.

I really enjoy the depth of the illustrations and the diversity of all the different kinds of families.

A picture book about diversity that ought to be in the home of every child. Beautiful art and not heavy-handed in its message.

I loved the book and it was great for counting during storytime. However, the detailed illustrations probably made it better suited for a one-on-one reading, or at least a very small group.

There are things I love about this book, especially the diversity of families shown, but overall I wasn't a fan. I found the structure of the book a bit weird/random and confusing. The repeated line is "one is [one/two/three/etc.]", and includes a list of items that are that many, and always ends with family of that many. For instance: "One is three. One house of bears. One bowl of pears. One family." Usually the illustration shows each item mentioned, as well as a family of that many. I just found that the collections of items was often random seeming (Why three pears?), and that the "one is three" type lines were a bit confusing, because one ISN'T three. I don't know, maybe I'm underestimating kids, but I didn't like it.

Good representation of what different families could/might look like. I understand the worry that some kids might be confused by the concept of one is... (another number), but I think that's a good conversation point! I suppose that means this might make a better read aloud/read with an adult than a child independently reading (on their own)- at least for the first time. But I do appreciate the intent of this one, and I enjoyed it.
