This novel is about the Holocaust, without ever really mentioning the Holocaust. The author focuses on the aftermath of the genocide, and the affect on the generation that came after. This issue of the generation gap is important...How can you love and respect your elders when they were involved in such a thing?
The Reader gives us an insight into how ordinary people can get involved with something so horrific- I don't think Hanna ever seems like a bad person but her circumstances meant that she did terrible things. This book is a good example of the narrator not being the main character.
I liked the ending for its realism.
A beautiful and thought provoking read.
