At first it seemed fun, seemed interesing how the main character didn't have a name or just the plot itself seemed fun. Later the book just became confusing. The characters most of the time made me angry, especially with the way they were talking, the only character I didn't find weird or got angry at was the bartender.
With the plot it's honestly not what I expected. I read the back of the book and was thinking it will be a lot more mysterious and will have spooky stuff happening but it was nothing like that. Or just how in the back of the book a Japanese couple was mentioned, making it seem like they will have a bigger role yet they disappeared after that one scene.
Also with the dialogue, I get that the author was trying to make something artistic or creative but it was honestly just not good and not fun to read.
And last thing, I could clearly feel that the book was written by a man.

I found this book very flawed. The story was stagnant, barely moved, and the characters were so unlovable it was hard to actually feel anything for them.
the whole idea of adopting a child just cause the woman was going to die so the man would have something to do made no sense, just giving a child issues before they even happen .the fact that they had a rape scene that later on was completely disregarded as nothing major and also the unnecessary description of the baby's genitalia made me feel super disgusted reading this book as well. Which is why I just could not enjoy it.

I'm not sure if I'm just not in the right stage in my life to be reading this book or this book is just bad?? I was confused most of the time of the book and other times I was waiting for something to happen and when it did nothing was explained and everything was brushed off. It doesn't matter how weird it is everything just passes because the main characters 'the man' and 'the woman' are both very passive characters and they don't go out of the way to know things. So I was bored without any action and unsatisfied because there are no explanations..

I won this book on a Catapult/Goodreads giveaway. Thanks!

I started enjoying this book and its subtleness. I expected to be unsettled in the way that only hardship and human mortality can unsettle a person.

However, it did not deliver. By the last third of the book, I was just waiting for it to end.

The novel's laconic prose rightly distances you emotionally from the unnamed protagonists, who are emotionally distant as is. At first, I felt like an intruder in their crumbling marriage and lives, which showed great promise. However, I think I've tried to justify one too many novels that did nothing for me emotionally with "that was the intention, since the characters don't know what to feel themselves". But I don't know if this satisfies me anymore. I think I'm demanding a bit more of authors & their characters. It may be unfair of me to do so. Perhaps it says more of who I am as a person than as a reader. But can you ever disentangle the two?

Quite honestly, I felt the characters' unhappiness was too simple. I needed the author to pick it apart, prod it, make me really uncomfortable and almost feel just as miserable. But I never felt anything more than apathy and (at times) annoyance at the two. Sadly, the book did not grip me enough, and the story itself was not strange or eerie enough to make up for the book's uncomplicated emotions.
