Book Review

Title: Smut Peddler Presents: My Monster Girlfriend by Andrea Purcell

Genre: Erotic, Horror, Anthology, Graphic Novel

Rating: 4.25 Stars

My Monster Girlfriend is labelled as an erotic horror anthology but I think it is more erotic paranormal. The first story is Feather by Kanesha C. Bryant which follows a trans main character, Orlando through an encounter with their partner, Feather who is a biblical accurate angel. Due to the difference in species they have been having trouble in the bedroom and are giving it another attempts and this one works out wonderfully for the pair. I will admit the Tardis comment made me cackle and I could literally hear the Doctor Who theme song in the background.

An Offer for the Maiden by Vesta Z was so wholesome as it follows another trans main character, Giovanni as they are visting by the manifested spirit of the Maiden. The Maiden comes to every new man in the town and takes a offering or kills them but Giovanni has been delaying the Maiden for a while because they have feelings for her which come out as well as presenting their offering which is accepted. Next is Trash Mob Romance -by AnderJak, was the most adorable story I think I’ve ever read which is saying something as it follows to more monstrous characters who have no idea about the more carnal aspects of a relationship and end up gaining help from another couple in the most hilarious manner.

Rogue-Like by Owlin is a short and smutty story following a goblin, Balst and a human, Baravos during a DnD like campaign which ends with them getting together, pretty simple but definitely enjoyable. The next story was Sweetest Nectar by mopinks, which was a strange story about a girl looking for a magical flower which turns out to be sentient and entices the girl to become one of her keepers in a strange yet delightful way. I really like the art style of this story as well with the almost neon colouring that was a very bold choice. Girl Fiend by Innkeeperworm was a great story with potential, it follow a maid, Harriet who is taking care of a hellhound bound to the manor she works in as no one else will do it. Harriet has learnt that Addison is quite pleasant to be around and it has been causing rumours and when the other maids leave an unpleasant surprise in Harriet’s bed she ends up spending the night in the basement with Addison which leads the other things. Seeing both of Addison’s forms was nice and the small touch of Harriet breaking the binding circle at the end was amazing.

For Your Eyes Only by Nero Villagallos O'Reilly was interesting to say the least. We are following Doctor Marie Zhou as she is on assignment on a moon, it isn’t clear which moon it is though. During her time there she has freed a being called Ren from kryosleep and they have been living together in secret for a while planning to escape together. The day before they are due to escape someone unexpectedly drops by but Ren hides will Marie deals with the person and the next day they make their escape. This is the first couple we’ve seen where the non-human partner is more beast than human and I didn’t know how to feel about it since there isn’t really anything about Ren that resembles a human unlike other characters like Addison. The next story is Flesh Hive by Iris Jay was a mind-breaking yet surprisingly wholesome story about a found family and coven that has had a member missing for a while but she returns to find the world completely changed and fears they won’t take her back. To her surprise they welcomed her with open arms as they had been waiting for her to come back and complete the coven again.

Bisclavret by Rowan Woodcock was a great take on the werewolf genre as we see a nobleman named Gwenn free a wolf from a trap only to find out that it is a female werewolf named Enora. Gwenn is smitten with Enora in both her wolf and more human form although she stays pretty close to the animal side and eventually they end up in bed together. I really liked their dynamic of submissive male with a more dominant female but this also touched more to the horror side than any of the previous stories and it just might be my favourite of the collection.

In Every Corner by Visceraaa was a lovely story about a woman with a sleep paralysis demon who genuinely believes her to be asleep and watches movies and podcasts to learn about human things in that time. When the demon realises the human is awake they become friends and eventually lovers. Puzzling Evidence by Penelope Merch is another DnD type story between a human and an imp dragon. It was short and to the point but I felt there was too much unnecessary dialogue in it that could have been communicated better. MonstHER Under the Bed by Bont and Wes Brooke was short and sweet but cute at the same time. It is essentially a throuple roleplaying about a monster under the bed and it was nice to see the check in and aftercare at the end.

Nyx by Taylor Titmouse was a delightful menage a trios with roots in Greek mythology as it features Nyx, the goddess of night, Boreas, the north wind and Zephyrus, the west wind and it really made me smile especially the ending. Neighbourly Help by Harriet Moulton is the story of Val, a vampire and Cherry, a siren who are neighbours and help each other when they are in need in more than one way. I really liked how the artist kept the siren’s unique anatomy rather than making it more traditional as it really added to the story. The final story in the collection is Forest Wedding by Otava Heikkilä which is a wedding between the human clan and the mountain folk but the wife won’t allow her husband to consummate the wedding until he proves himself to her and he goes above and beyond to do so. Overall, I really liked this collection apart from one or two stories which I didn’t enjoy but I will definitely be checking out more especially My Monster Boyfriend in the future.

I didn't really consider how much dude on dude action there would be in something called My Monster Boyfriend, which is fine, just not my preference.

Anyways, this is an enjoyable, fun, cute, sexy collection of comics about all kinds of different monsters! It's great!

If you have read the other Smut Pedler books, you know what you are in for. This one is kind of fun, in that all the lovers are some kind of monster, although some are more monstrous than others.

Not all straight, although who can tell what a monster is when it is all tentacles. Gargoyles, fallen angles, ghosts, it is amazing how many things people can have sex with, but it is all done beautifully, and either with humor or grace.

Some are very moving, such as the one about a woman having sex with her recently killed lover, or funny, where a woman captures a vampire and drives him crazy with her needs.

Not a book to race out and find, but if you like erotic sequential art, this should be added to your library. And check out the other Smut Peddler books, too, while you are at it.
