As a fierce man-hating lesbian, I go into any and all books already counting the flaws of the male characters to see if they are worth the time the author spends curating them. In The Raven King, my count came back astronomically high. Every single man- NO, every single character (save Renee) has their flaws and their issues but none of them more prevalent than fucking Riko Moriyama. The storyline for this book carried out beautifully and I loved watching the transitions between characters as they grew closer through Neil’s inevitable force shut down. However, the characters drove me wild and I would ring their necks if they were real people and I didn’t think they would be able to k!ll me. Like my last review, or rant if you will, I recommend this book but please read the trigger warnings first! There is a larger than necessary amount of problematic shit that goes down.

  • My review is for all three books
  • The series is wonderful yet Sakavic found a way to ruin it every time it began to shine. From the unneeded
    Spoilersex
scenes-which frankly felt forced and were included for the sake of fanservice, entire lulls in between rushed arcs, to the edgy, dramatic, and repetitive situations all come off as above average quality Wattpad mafia fanfics. That being said Sakavic still had me wanting to find out what happened to the characters despite my aversion to sport themed content normally. Finally, the ending felt entirely too rushed and highlighted how Sakavic uses trauma as a romance plot rather than the seriousness it should have been dealt with.

Ugh, the relationships in this book really develop so much and it’s so good.  The plot really comes to life, problem after problem shows up and Neil is just stupidly there.

I used to not like this book as much as the other two, the angst was just too much but after so, so, so, many re-reads I love seeing how the characters develop, how the relationships build, platonic and romantic, Neil shares more, learns more about Andrew and it’s actually written really well.

Plus it’s super funny to re-read this and see just how much of a simp Andrew Minyard is for Neil so early on.  It’s something I don’t remember noticing through my first read but no I can’t unnoticed it.  Neil just being like, “I just asked.” the whole time.  Meanwhile, the foxes are just staring at him horrified Andrew didn’t kill him yet.

The end with Wymack picking Neil up at the airport after Christmas gets me every time, the emotional damage, the wholesomeness of David Wymack doing everything for his Foxes.  So good and so damn depressing all at once.  Pain and suffering but also iconic quotes and laughing at a short little blond man with knives simping for a pathological lair who is very much not “fine” at any point in his life.
