I’ll admit this took me a bit to get into but once this picked up, oh boy was I hooked. The magic/world requires some concentration to understand but that delicious enemies to lovers trope had me hello.

Just a quick review before I jump into the next book.
I absolutely loved this book. Books on Kindle Unlimited are always a hit or miss for me so I admittedly went into this one cautiously hopeful. It was clear by just a few chapters in though that this is exactly the type of story I’m always hoping to find. The characters are vivacious and magnetic, the magic system is unique and exciting and the world building is immersive. I’m so happy I stumbled across this book and can’t wait to find out what happens in the next one.

I enjoyed the story! I found the characters compelling and the world building interesting. Keen to see where she goes with it. As a professional musician, I also found it interesting to see a magic system based on music... I found the execution with the flute a bit odd at first, but I think the concept has a lot of potential. Looking forward to book two.

The Gods of Men tells us a story about a girl who accidentally killed her sister when she came into power. So basically, she had to go into hiding, far far away from her family.
Imari took a disguise as Sable — a healer in a small village — for ten years. One day, a man came, looking for her. Unfortunately, her true identity was discovered and they had to work together if they still wanted to live.
This book has a great build up and I can see this book has a potential to become a movie or tv series. Adventure, action, with a sprinkle of romance are blended together beautifully.
However, I think the author could do a better job with the world building and magic system. I also I had a hard time connected to the characters other than Imari. And to be totally honest, I felt bored until I reached 15% of the book.
This is far from a bad book. But it’s not also that great. I have a good experience reading the book after I passed 15%.
I don’t hate nor do I love this book. And even tho this book is far from perfect for me, it still leaves me wanting more.

The closeness shocked her at first. The pure vulnerability of it, the brush of his breath against her neck, his damp skin flush with hers. The solidness of him. But as his body heat slowly seeped into her skin, quieting the cold, her shock turned into gratitude. That if she were to die this day, at least she wouldn’t die alone.

“Three? When you started training with a sword?”
“Yes.” The word came out strained at the edges.
She regarded him. “Either your parents are exceedingly ambitious, or they didn’t love you very much.”
His eyes brightened. “Both.”
“There are always two sides, Sable,” the Wolf said lowly. “Don’t dismiss mine simply because it complicates yours.”
“And… maybe it’s selfish of me, but I thought it might also be something to remember me by.”
He looked up again and cocked a brow. “Selfish? You’re not the sort of person one forgets, and now you’re trying to haunt me in flowers. I call that greedy.”

I’m not sure where to start with this book, I mean music is magic, necromancers, wraith like creatures, not things you’d find in every fantasy book.
The writing was so amazing, the descriptions of everything was easy to picutre in my mind, the images Sable saw when she played her flute was stunning, I wish I could have been there with Sable as her mind flew over the desert.
The characters aren’t perfect, they all have flaws and I think makes them more real, more relateable, more likeable, more despised.
While following along with Sable and Jor, the tension between the two at times was just so ‘ARGH!!” like and other times it’s a wonder they didn’t kill each other. Even after the truth is revealed about each other, they still seemed able to forgive.
Finding out the history of the Necromancer and why the magic is forbidden was a really interesting part of the book also. I will say I was shocked to find out who the necromancer was. I didn’t see that coming at all.
I have one small issue with the arc that I read, there was no map. I’m really hoping there will be a map in the final copy since I think it would be really interesting to get a better idea of the lay out of the land and to see where exactly Sable and Jor went.
