A fun read, set during a house party in a country home. The majority of our usual characters are missing, such as Bert, Cec, Mr. and Mrs. Butler and D.I. “call me ✨Jack Robinson✨”, though he does get an honorary mention which is better than nothing. The references to previous cases were nice touches, as was the addition of a character resembling Miss Marple!

The book started off with a cast list of 32 characters, which worried me initially. It wasn’t hard to keep track though, and the story flowed along nicely. A murdered chambermaid, a host receiving threats, a house cut off from the outside world by flooding and other mysterious happenings make sure Phryne can never catch her breath after solving a case.

Anything Goes: "In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking, now heaven knows, anything goes. The world's gone mad today and good's bad today and most guys today that women prize today are just silly gigolos. Although I'm not a great romancer I know that you're bound to answer when I propose. Anything goes."

>>> "Phryne fought down an urge to start throwing things. There was a fine heavy skillet to hand and she thought that Mr Black's looks could hardly be damaged further by a good solid metallic impact. And this would make Phryne feel much better."

>>> "Good. Now pull, push and twiddle everything which looks twiddleable."
