4 1/2 stars. Really loved this book and how it showed the vulnerable side of not only the patients the author sees, but herself in dealing with her own crisis. The relationship between client and therapist is deeply personal, and the stories told about how people deal with that in both positive and negative ways was fascinating. If you've ever been in therapy yourself, you'll recognize a lot of the techniques she discusses, but looking in on the sessions as a third party was sometimes happy, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes both simultaneously. Highly recommend.

Incredibly readable. Very interesting narratives weaving the author’s experience with the clients she interacted with. Unfortunately, the way the author contributes to the overuse of “narcissism” as a synonym for “self-centered asshole” is highly unethical given her profession and influence, and her descriptions of cluster B disorders is sloppy and at times incorrect. The fact that this book and the author are so popular makes her responsibility to the truth even more important. This book is a diverting read for anyone who has done serious work into understanding psychology, behavior, and personality disorders (but her life-altering “nuggets of wisdom” are pretty blasé from that perspective). Anyone looking at this book as a therapy-assist, a semi-self-help book, or a dive into what makes others tick will be mislead. Read with caution.
