This was one of my favorite Goosebumps stories as a kid, so I decided to read it during a flight recently. As far as children's novels go, it holds up

This is more of an overall review of the series, really. When I was a kid, I used to devour these books, but sadly I'd recently somehow managed to forget all about them. I was reminded, however, when I rediscovered this awesome blog: http://www.bloggerbeware.com. These books are a mixture of varying degrees of terrible and amazing - at the same time. I honestly find it really hard to rate them, seeing as they're such a major part of my reading foundation. 11 year-old me would probably have given all of them 5 stars, but alas, I'm no longer 11 years old. In acknowledgement of my young self and the wonderful kitschiness of the series, I've decided on 4 stars. Also, they vary a lot in quality, but seeing as it's been so long since I've read them, I don't remember which ones were best. 4 stars it is.

Peak Goosebumps terror, here. The characters are more or less believable, and the camp setting itself isn't what lends to the horror, but the behavior of the counselors. The kids are all Type A personalities, which is scary in its own right, but they aren't the ones to be feared. Being a child and being unable to trust any of the adults that are supposed to be caring for you is quite scary, but add a bunch of "disappearances" of other children while the main character's parents are who knows where gives a feeling of helplessness, since Wendy (and her brother) are completely at the strange camp's mercy. However, the main character's focus on the camp activities takes away from what would be a tenser atmosphere.

A note about the ending, semi-spoilery but it must be said:
Spoiler the monster is one of the nastiest I think the Goosebumps series provides, and even reading it as an adult, its description makes my stomach turn.

I would absolutely recommend this book. It's a fun and spooky story about a creepy sports camp. Only the best!
