I'll be thinking about these characters for a long time, I'm almost sure of it.

It makes since this was optioned by A24 as an Ari Aster project. It’s a bit heady and plays with the form in a way that may be off-putting to certain core fans of the genre. The characters blending together visually is occasionally frustrating but serves the greater purpose of the novel. Rating subject to change as I have Sabrina on deck. Big ups to the LA public library for your wonderful comics selection.

Really dark and weird. Like [b:Sabrina|37533587|Sabrina|Nick Drnaso|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1513309376l/37533587._SX50_.jpg|59135009] but with a much bigger cast of major characters. I liked it.

[b:Acting Class|56375568|Acting Class|Nick Drnaso|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1660149396l/56375568._SX50_.jpg|87839784] follows ten people who join a (you guessed it) acting class led by a strange but charismatic teacher who encourages them to explore their minds and push their boundaries. They all have their own reasons for joining-- escapism, desire for confidence, yearning for a break to the daily monotony-- and each will be changed in their own way.

It's odd, unsettling, occasionally funny and eventually starts to make you question what is real. Where is the line between acting and becoming what you're pretending to be? If your "act" really hurts someone, can it be just an act?

It's a really sharp, disturbing contemplation of that old concept of humans being players on the world's stage. The character drawings are very basic, androgynous, often showing little expression, which pairs well with the bold ideas about psychology, the power of suggestion and our desire to perform so we can be part of the group.

It's another one that's contemporary but feels like it should be dystopian. The characters float in their oft bare panels, lending a touch of surrealism to the narrative. There's something so eerie about Drnaso's work.

terrible art, I mean everyone had the same face and looks exactly the same. that, paired with the way too frequent POV changes without giving you anything to sink your teeth into made it boring and tedious

Beautiful strangeness. It begins as an odd but straightforward dive into an amateur acting class that anyone familiar with those will recognize. And then it slowly peels that reality away and the true Drnazo oddity is pumped through this world and characters. I don't LOVE it through the roof but I can't for a minute look away or stop wondering what'll happen next. And I'm never disappointed. Epic oddness. Subtle strangeness. I'll read all he does.
