 If you take Depression-era fiction, mix in Huckleberry Finn, toss in the treatment of American Indians, and use the backbone of the Odyssey, you get This Tender Land. The first 3/4 rolled along, but I could always put it down. However the ending felt disjointed and rushed compared to the rest of the book. The change of tone and sudden magical realism at the end really threw me. Overall, it was enjoyable but underwhelming. The Odyssey-related Easter eggs kept me reading. Read if you enjoy: quest novels, Americana, Homer's Odyssey, midwestern settings, Huckleberry Finn
