If “it was a different time” was a book.

Masterful storytelling. Beautiful concepts. My biggest critique is the harmful trope that people are “better off dead” than disabled. Really? That’s so harmful and so avoidable in an otherwise gripping, thoughtful, artful story.

As long as you’re up for a book that spends a significant amount of time considering the nature of God (note: in a broad way that wrestles with difficult questions, not a specifically Christian way) and the meaning of faith, I recommend this novel wholeheartedly. It was full of adventure and equally full of heart. Of the dozens of novels I’ve read so far in 2021, this was probably my favorite. Read if you like: The Nickel Boys, Louise Erdrich, the Midwest, wrestling with life’s big questions, Depression novels, a touch of magical realism.
